SINA Medical Glass – Glass Futures phase 2 – Town Deal

NEW MEDICAL GLASS MANUFACTURING IN ST HELENS

At the outset of the Town Deal process, Glass Futures was recognised as a project of international significance. The Town Deal Prospectus allowed for any projects of regional importance to be incorporated into a TIP and therefore in May 2020 the Chair introduced Glass Futures into the process as one of the projects for consideration. It would go on to make the final 8 projects and eventually benefit from 5.5 million of Town Deal Funding.

Glass Futures has supported the creation of SINA Medical Glass with shareholding partners SGC Group Intl Limited and Hambleden Capital. SINA Medical will convert a distribution warehouse into a modern medical glass manufacturing centre creating 180 jobs by 2025 and over 300 when fully operational by 2030.

DELIVERING INNOVATION IN MEDICAL GLASS

SINA Medical will manufacture 300m glass vials per annum, sufficient to meet the UK’s domestic 150-200m annual requirement and with the balance to be exported to meet global demand. Through a partnership with Glass Futures (of which SINA will be a member) a new furnace design will be developed such that the medical glass products created are as sustainable as possible. Low carbon products will result from more efficient glass forming processes and enhanced recycling technologies.

CO-INVESTMENT

Overall, SINA will co-invest over £23m by 2025 alongside £5.5m from the Towns Fund in Phase 1 and a further c£60m by 2030 to realise Phase 2.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

SINA will work closely with Glass Futures and local employment and training providers to ensure that local people are supported into accessing the high value roles created by the project. SINA will offer apprenticeships and supported placements to allow people to access in work training and development opportunities.
